Our Common Story: Promoting Big History Worldwide

 

Editor's Note: Do you know about the "Big History" movement in curriculum and education? Betty Kissilove brought this movement and website to my attention. Big History seems to be a kind of synonym for the Universe Story. But it has an organized community of educators who are promoting the teaching of "Big History".

Who are we? How did we get here? What does it all mean?
 
After thousands of years trying, we can answer two of these big questions. Modern science has discovered a progressively factual account of the universe and ourselves. It spans some 13.7 billion years from the primordial flaring forth of the early universe to the rapid flaring forth of our global civilization. The story blends cosmology, physics, chemistry, geology, biology, anthropology, sociology and history into a single, compelling narrative. It encompasses all nations, all cultures, and all times. We call it Our Common Story.
 
What does it all mean? That depends on how you interpret this great story and the future we create together in the 21st century and beyond. This grand history is perhaps the most remarkable achievement of human civilization, but it is rarely taught and studied as such. It may also be an essential tool in securing Our Common Future –promoting excellence in education, transcending dangerous conflicts, and effectively addressing the economic and environmental challenges of our global civilization.
 
 

It is now possible to teach the history of the universe, the evolution of life, and the rise of human civilizations as an integrated, single semester course or series of integrated courses.(1) Typically science is taught as separate specializations and history taught in different periods and regions. Unique in Our Common Story is the integration of all these different specializations into a single, narrative account of the development of the universe, the evolution of life, and the history of humanity.(2)  Some call this new integrated story told by science and history “the New Cosmology” or “the Epic of Evolution.” Others call it “the History of Nature,” or simply “Big History.” We are calling it Our Common Story, because for the first time humans have an origin “myth” that transcends all of our regional, religious, and tribal differences.

The advantages of teaching general science and world history as an epic narrative are many:

  1. The integrative narrative provides a mnemonic for students and adults alike to understand and remember the details of science and history.
     
  2. This approach helps to inspire students and adults to appreciate the awesome grandeur of the new sciences and the human adventure.
     
  3. This approach helps students and adults to understand the unique environmental, political, economic, and technological challenges of the twenty-first century global civilization.
     
  4. This approach helps to address profound existential questions of meaning and purpose, virtues and values, in ways that are respectful of science, supportive of progressive religion, and conducive to civil societies.(3)

Our Common Story is an increasingly factual narrative that transcends and includes all of our different stories. We see this curriculum, and exploratory dialogues about how to interpret this story, as an important component in addressing the challenges of culture wars and clashing civilizations, as well as a productive context to solving many of the great political, economic and environmental challenges in the world today. We seek to incubate such courses in undergraduate colleges and universities, book clubs, religious congregations, and ultimately in age-appropriate ways in K-12 education, here in the United States and around the world.

Diffraction of sunlight by minute cloud droplets is responsible for the
lovely pastel hues. Because the droplets are so tiny (1/10 to 1/1000 the
size of raindrops), light waves that interact with them aren't refracted
nearly as much as they're deflected — in all directions. Iridescence or
irisation is generally observed in clouds that have formed relatively
recently since then their droplets are more likely to be quite small and of
more uniform size. Iridescent clouds are found within about 20 degrees of
the Sun, so make sure to protect your eyes whenever looking for them.

The Interiority of Climate Change

What is the interiority of climate change, the psychological dimensions, the ways that it is bringing us together as an Earth Community toward greater complexity and love? Teilhard might call it the "Divinization of Climate Change" (following on his idea of divinization of activities and the divinization of passivities).

The Risk of Ocean Death from CO2 – A Summary from Cancun, COP 16

This is the most important information I found at the UNFCCC COP16 in Cancun. This is still very far from what is in the media now, but a preview of what we will be facing in coming years.

This new perspective on ocean acidity is at once terrifying, but in some ways clarifying, as it brings into sharp focus what we are facing, and may finally put an end to the boiling a frog syndrome we have been caught in for years. It will be a hard battle to cut through denial, but once we do the magnitude of true task we face has been sharply clarified.

Climate – The Risk of Ocean Death from CO2

Cancun, Dec 10, 2010 – The new trump card in climate change will be ocean acidity, or what might be better called ocean death. This newly recognized threat makes drastically cutting CO2 astronomically more urgent, even as negotiators are just now barely beginning to agree to the emissions reductions required to avert dangerous climate change.

Destabilizing the chemistry of the oceans threatens to irreversibly wipe out the fisheries that humanity depends on for food, while jeopardizing the Earth’s entire ecosystem. It is not an overstatement to describe this as the risk of the death of the oceans as we know them.

There is already enough extra CO2 in the atmosphere to crash the oceans 50 years from now. This is due to the 50-year delay between the CO2 level in the atmosphere, and the effect of that level on ocean acidity. We are already at, or above, an atmospheric level now that could cause a future tipping point in the oceans. This means that within 50 years, or less, we must bring the CO2 level back down to where it is now, and then continue to reduce it further. This is vastly more ambitious than the reductions currently imagined in climate negotiations.

As the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere increases, the oceans absorb more CO2. This has previously been regarded as a good thing, as it has held down the atmospheric CO2 level and thereby slowed global warming. However, when CO2 dissolves in water it forms carbonic acid. This reacts with calcium carbonate in the water, decreasing the amount of calcium available to organisms that need it to build their shells. At even higher concentrations the increased acidity would begin to weaken existing shells by pulling calcium out of them.

Ocean Death now poses a far more severe, certain, and immanent threat than climate change – at much lower CO2 levels. These CO2 levels have long been discounted for climate change, but the new threat to oceans has yet to be understood and considered by negotiators.

The IUCN side event at the UNFCCC COP16 disclosed that a strong consensus of ocean research shows that even 350ppm CO2 might be too high. Researchers say the current level, rapidly approaching 400ppm, is already close to, or beyond, the maximum that oceans could survive. All agreed that 450ppm would cause collapse of the oceans. If we crash the food web in the oceans we would throw the whole world into ecological collapse and famine, and we could do it within less than 50 years if we continued on our current trajectory.

This is in sharp contrast to the CO2 numbers currently under discussion for climate, where politicians and negotiators routinely accept projected temperature increases associated with CO2 levels of 550ppm and beyond. The science around ocean acidity is simpler, more direct, and far more certain than for climate change, yet it is difficult to predict whether the scientific recognition of this new threat will cause the US wake up from well funded denial any faster. We will likely be closer to 400ppm before we begin to act seriously, and a large amount of additional CO2 overshoot is built in to the system. From where we stand now it looks like it would take a miracle to achieve peak CO2 at as low as 450ppm. However, the science now tells us that we face an even more urgent race to take fossil emissions to zero and then begin to rapidly remove net carbon from the atmosphere, before the effects of the carbon we have already emitted catch up with us in the oceans.

Background on avoiding Ocean Death
The first point to understand is that the risk from ocean acidity is purely a function of CO2, not CO2 equivalents, such as methane, nitrous oxide, and other greenhouse gasses. These other gases remain important for temperature, where they could still potentially trigger dangerous runaway feedback loops, but assuming that we do cut CO2 quickly and deeply enough to avoid ocean death, we will also solve climate change.

Secondly, it will not be enough to simply stop emitting fossil carbon; we need to actively remove carbon from the atmosphere to reduce the total atmospheric CO2 level to below where it is now.

Third, we have far less time to do this than has previously been assumed; less than 50 years. After we finish wasting time in well funded denial, we will need to undertake a crash global program to decarbonize the world – on a par with WWII and the space program.

What can we do about it?

The first step will be to simply face the truth, and work to make society understand both the seriousness of the danger and the actions that we must take to address the threat and protect our children. This will be like round two of the climate change debate, but with new science that now shows a simple direct linear relationship between the CO2 level and a new catastrophic global threat. We need to steel ourselves, rise to the challenge, and put PR people rather than scientists in charge of the language and the message.

Taking CO2 emissions to zero – far more rapidly than we have imagined
The first part of the challenge is well understood from climate change. What is frightening is just how rapidly we must do it to avoid the new threat. What is lacking are the will and resources to do it so quickly. While daunting, it is technically achievable to de-carbonize the world’s energy infrastructure in a matter of decades. In addition to efficiency, and the standard renewables, wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, wave and tidal, the other huge wildcard is nuclear, especially the new fast breeder reactor design from Argon National Labs.

Removing net CO2 from the atmosphere
The other new factor that separates the risk of ocean death from previously understood risks of climate change is the need to actively remove CO2 from the atmosphere – very quickly. We will need to actively remove a huge amount of CO2 from the atmosphere over the next 50 years.

While many policy makers assume that CCS (carbon capture and storage) will be the solution to both CO2 emissions and removing net CO2, CCS actually remains an unproven technology, and may potentially still be fatally flawed do to problems with produced water (dirty liquids and gas forced to the surface), CO2 leakage, and the sheer volume of suitable formations required. At best CCS may help reduce point-source fossil emissions, such as from coal-fired power plants. Using CCS to sequester carbon released from biomass energy to achieve net carbon removal remains one of the big speculative solutions for removing net carbon from the atmosphere.

In response to concerns about ocean acidity a few scientists in the geoengineering community have suggested adding calcium carbonate to oceans, but this would require massive additional energy inputs and would also raise new unanswered questions for ocean ecosystems. At the far end of sci-fi geoengineering ideas are proposals for synthetic trees to actively scrub CO2 out of the atmosphere. These would also require vast amounts of extra energy and presuppose that CCS will work to actually store the CO2 removed from the atmosphere.

Increased net forest cover and low carbon agriculture and rangeland management techniques are the lowest cost way of achieving one-time increases in total terrestrial carbon storage. Preserving and ultimately re-expanding, tropical forests are at the core of the REDD+ initiative and are certainly the first place to start. Soil carbon is also beginning to be discussed and is expected to become important at COP17 in South Africa, but all land use changes combined will not be able to provide more than a fraction of the total carbon removal needed. There is simply not enough capacity to remove the bulk of the net surplus fossil carbon from the atmosphere.

So far, perhaps the best-proven method of removing and storing large amounts of excess carbon from the atmosphere may be biochar. Biochar can also initially be cost-effective based on value-added benefits from soil fertility, pollution mitigation and increased total biomass. Sustainable biochar made from only a small fraction of available agricultural residues could remove almost a gigaton per year of carbon, while other calculations suggest that biochar could remove as much as 5 gigatons per year using 10% of all available waste biomass. The biggest benefit of biochar over CCS alone is that it can increase total productive lands by reclaiming depleted tropical land and thereby taking pressure off intact tropical forests. If seawater were used to irrigate salt tolerant plants on coastal deserts the total might exceed those numbers.

Increased carbon cycling in the oceans is the other major potential source of photosynthetic activity. The ocean scientists at the IUCN event at COP16 did not like the idea of seeding the ocean with iron, and claimed that all of the major ocean NGO’s agree with their position on this. However, photosynthesis in the oceans is the most likely place to look beyond terrestrial biomass to achieve gigaton-scale carbon removal over time.

The direct photosynthetic capture of CO2 by algae for biofuels production shows promise as an alternative to fossil carbon feedstocks, but it is not clear whether this will ultimately be helpful for net carbon removal from the atmosphere.

How much carbon?

CO2 absorbed by the ocean has accounted for about 1/3 of all fossil emissions, while terrestrial sinks are estimated to have absorbed about another 1/3 of fossil emissions. The oceans will give up CO2 on the way back down to lower atmospheric levels, but terrestrial sinks will not.

One ppm of atmospheric CO2 is equivalent to about two metric tonnes of solid carbon, so once we get to zero fossil emissions, we will need to remove about two gigatons of carbon per 1ppm reduction in the atmospheric CO2 level. Once we reduce the atmospheric CO2 level enough that the oceans begin to emit CO2 rather than absorb it, then we will need to remove more like three gigatons of carbon per 1ppm reduction in the atmospheric CO2 level.

The apparently insurmountable challenge over the next 50 years will be to keep the oceans from seeing atmospheric CO2 levels above 400ppm for any significant period. To avoid this, we will need to undertake crash programs to both slash fossil emissions and to actively remove net carbon from the atmosphere – as rapidly as possible. If we can do so, the same programs can continue to remove net carbon once we curtail fossil emissions and take us back down to 350ppm, or below. To hold the CO2 level at 400ppm will require slashing total emissions much faster than we currently imagine possible, while also removing several gigatons per year of net carbon from the atmosphere. To eventually go from 400ppm back down to 350ppm will require removing more like 150 gigatons of carbon, as once the oceans start to release CO2 that extra carbon will need to be removed and retired as well.

 We Fail to Respect Nature’s Rights at Our Own Peril, New Report Warns
 Report released at COP 16 offers paradigm shifting climate solutions
 
 December 6, 2010, Cancun, Mexico – As the COP16 climate talks
 entered their second week, three civil society groups released a
 report entitled, “Does Nature Have Rights: Transforming Grassroots
 Organizing to Protect the People and the Planet.” The report,
 compiled by Global Exchange, the Council of Canadians and Fundacion
 Pachamama, sheds light on “the Rights of Nature,” a paradigm-
 shifting approach to legislating resource use. Illuminating essays
 by Uruguayan author Eduardo Galeano, social and environmental
 activists Maude Barlow, Shannon Biggs, and others demonstrate the
 need to broaden legal frameworks to recognize ecological limits,
 natural laws, and the interdependency of all life.
 
 Out of a landmark gathering of social movements in Bolivia last
 April emerged the Cochabamba People’s Agreement, honoring the Rights
 of Nature; this document was later merged into the UNFCCC
 negotiating text. When the text was released to delegates at COP 16,
 however, all reference to Cochabamba had been removed.
 
 Shannon Biggs, Community Rights Director with Global Exchange,
 states, “The Rights of Nature offers a platform for action to
 challenge the market-based approach that dominates the UN COP
 process.”
  
  As the report outlines, “Entire human societies, our global economic
  system and indeed our structures of law, place humans not just apart
  from, but actually above nature. But what is climate change but
  Nature telling us we have lived beyond the limits of nature’s law?”
  
  This report calls for action from the community-level to the U.N.,
  and offers case studies of legal changes already underway in favor
  of the Rights of Nature. Last month, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania became
  the first major U.S. city to ban natural gas drilling while
  elevating community decision-making and the rights of nature over
  corporate ‘rights.’”
  
  While the number of communities taking this approach to ecosystem
  protection is growing, it is also being actively pursued at the
  national level. In 2008, Ecuador became the first nation to include
  the Rights of Nature in its Constitution.
  
  “As a country devastated by oil exploitation, industrial agriculture
  and international debt, Ecuador needs a bulwark against the
  corporate plunder of our natural riches. Recognizing the Rights of
  Nature in our national laws begins to provide that protection,” said
  Belen Paez of Fundacion Pachamama.
  
  “In order to survive, we need a change in the human relationship
  with the natural world from one of exploitation to one of democracy
  with other beings,” says Maude Barlow, national chairperson with the
  Council of Canadians, “If we are members of the earth’s community,
  then our rights must be balanced against those of plants, animals,
  rivers and ecosystems.”

The title, All My Relations is a Native American prayer expressing the interconnection of all life. The art work is in the shape of a medicine wheel or mandala, a cognitive tool used in Native American and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Each piece in this series reveals the Earth as the primary revelation of the Divine. Together they tell the Story of Our Universe, from its inception in the Mind of God through to the flowering of human consciousness. They depict the unity of the spiritual, human and natural world.
 
This triptych was inspired by the work of Thomas Berry and Teilhard de Chardin which reveals that each of us is the sum total of 15 billion years of unbroken evolution and is totally unique and unrepeatable. Humanity is that being in which the Earth (and the Universe) comes to reflect upon itself. Teilhard called this new dimension of self-reflexive awareness the noosphere (from the Greek word noos, meaning consciousness). Gaia, the ancient Earth Goddess refered to in the title of these works, is the name given to the scientific theory developed by atmospheric chemist James Lovelock, postulating that the Earth is a living organism.
 
This perception of unity between humans and the Earth is essential to developing a new, benign relationship with our planet. Given the destruction that humans have visited upon the natural world, this view is critical to our survival and the fate of the Earth. We must reclaim the ancient knowing of our intimate relatedness to the rest of Life — to All Our Relations.

Angela Manno's art and teaching are dedicated to the vision of humanity and the Earth living as one healthy and harmonious being. She is an internationally exhibited artist, writer and educator. She is known for her mastery of a wide variety of exacting media, as well as her pioneering work combining contemporary, western art media with ancient, non-western forms.

Angela has been researching the pattern that connects personal and planetary well-being for nearly 30 years. To that end she has explored many ways of knowing, including indigenous shamanism of North and South America, the Earth Literacy program at Genesis Farm in New Jersey, and in an internship at Solviva Bioshelter with the award-winning practical ecologist, Anna Edey.
 
She is a graduate of the School of the Spirit (Quaker) Ministry On Being a Spiritual Nurturer.  She created and taught “Eco-spirituality & Action,” a multi-disciplinary, semester-long course on the principles and practices of the Ecological Age to adults and young people at Friends Seminary in Manhattan. It became the basis of the "Eco-Spirituality and Action Minute" (https://www.nyym.org/nurture/ewg/peacewithearth.html), a further articulation of Quakers' long-standing Peace testimony that calls for the cessation of humanity's war against Earth. Her 90-minute digital slide presentation, “Picturing the Ecological Age” features hundreds of images of the ways people are transforming their relationship to Earth and in so doing helping to bring forth the Ecological Age.
 
Angela's art can be found in the permanent fine art collections of NASA and the Smithsonian Institution as well as in private collections throughout the world. Her work has been exhibited in museums, and in group and solo shows from Mexico City to Moscow. In 2005 it was displayed at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City as part of a celebration of Teilhard de Chardin, and in 2008 at the inauguration of the Seven Pillars House of Wisdom in New Lebanon, NY. Her art has appeared on book covers including Doors of Understanding: Conversations in Global Spirituality in Honor of Ewert Cousins and in Dr. Albert LaChance's epic poem Jonah: A Prophecy at the Millennium. Her imagery has illustrated many magazine articles including pieces written by Vice President Al Gore and Matthew Fox.
 
Angela's audio-visual program “Conscious Evolution: The World At One“ premiered at John Denver's Second Annual “Choices for the Future” Windstar Symposium  in (1987) and has been featured since then at conferences on global, spiritual and environmental awareness, including the annual conference of the Association for Humanistic Psychology at Stanford University.

What does Ecozoic mean?

The term "Ecozoic era"  was coined by Thomas Berry in conversation with Brian Swimme for their book The Universe Story in order to describe the geologic era that Earth is entering – when humans live in a mutually enhancing relationship with Earth and the Earth community.

Earth is entering a new geologic era because the previous one, the Cenozoic era (spanning the last ~65 million years), has been terminated by the western-style industrialized human community in the late 19th, 20th, and early 21st century.

While not intending to change the course of evolution or change the chemistry or large scale cycles of the planet, we have indeed done so.  We have been, as a civilization, simply paying attention to our own human needs, acting out of what Dr. Brian Swimme calls "local mind". 

While many individuals of the last centuries have been aware of the effects our way of life have had on the Earth community, as a society we have been unable to see those effects.  We have not been paying attention to how our activities have impacted the larger community of life and those structures and systems that support life.

The evolutionary dynamics that created Earth now include the conscious and unconscious actions of the human family.

Swimme-Tucker film update “Journey of the Universe”

November 30, 2010, updated announcement from Mary Evelyn Tucker and Brian
Swimme:

Dear friends,

You have recently received an announcement about the Journey of the Universe
project and we have had a number of wonderful email responses. Thank you so
much for the support so many of you have shown over the years for this work,
so deeply inspired by Thomas Berry. Your prayers are still much appreciated!

We wanted to clarify a few things regarding the project and where we are.

The website will point you to a fuller description of the project and the

The film will be broadcast by KQED PBS station in San Francisco sometime
after May 2011. We don't yet know the date but will let you know when we do.

We will be showing the film initially at Yale on March 25 and 26 2010. We
will also be showing it in San Francisco on April 30, 2010. Details will
follow as they come into place. We are delighted to have other showings of
course as the film becomes available as a DVD for purchase in May or June.

A book will accompany the film and is being published in May 2010 (2011?) by Yale

Finally we are still working to complete a 13 part educational series that
will accompany the book and the film and can be used in classrooms or

more than 30 years since Thomas Berry first wrote The New Story in 1978.

be able to help with your questions regarding your own plans for showing the
film or buying the book etc.
